The Colorist Guide to DaVinci Resolve

This course is intended for those interested in learning professional color correction techniques.

Basic knowledge of DaVinci Resolve. Completion of The Beginner’s Guide course is recommended.

• Color theory
• Footage balancing and adjustment of contrast and hue
• Creating chromatic continuity across shots and shot-matching strategies
• Isolated area correction using selection, tracking, and face refinement tools
• Understanding and managing the node-based color grading pipeline
• Grade management across clips, groups, and timelines for efficient workflow
• Timeline conforming via XML and integration with post-production workflows
• Adjustment of image properties, sizing, and keyframe-based correction animation
• RAW media management and performance optimization
• Project preparation for rendering and final delivery

The course progresses through footage balancing, creating chromatic continuity, and isolated area correction, followed by advanced node management, grade organization, timeline conforming, RAW media handling, workflow optimization, and project delivery.

30 hours

Premium activity: at the conclusion of the course, participants are offered the opportunity to attend a one-week practical workshop, working with post-house high-end. Places are limited; the location is to be confirmed, and those completing the full CAS qualify for a discounted rate.

This module is part of the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Professional Program in Editing & Post-Production. Participants who wish to enroll in the full program are eligible for a reduced tuition fee of CHF 5,000.

This course introduces and explores the professional workflow of color correction and color grading in DaVinci Resolve. Participants will learn to balance footage, maintain chromatic consistency across shots, and enhance image areas using selection, tracking, and color manipulation tools. The course covers the node-based structure of the software, enabling participants to organize efficient and flexible grading pipelines. Techniques for conforming timelines from other editing systems, managing grades across clips and timelines, and using groups for complex sequences are also addressed. The final phase focuses on RAW media management, performance optimization, and preparation for rendering and final delivery.
